Google Development for GPS Applications?
A long time ago, we’ve featured here the google imaging features that overlays High Resolution Images on selected locations worldwide. Using googleearth, you can see a close up images by simple url hack. Most of the close-up photos are taken somewhere in Africa.
There are close-up shot of camels and people, the car show on Elizabeth Street, a nice capture of the 737-mid flight. Of course, who will missed the amusing image capture at Las Vegas that includes the Pyramid shaped hotel, dolphins and the white limousine. There are lots of hidden images there, I suggest you navigate and browse this site under category “google” to check my previous post about it.
Then, few months later. Google launch its popular Google Street View allowing you to virtually tour cities such as San Franciso, New York, Las Vegas, Miami and Denver with your fingertip. Using the 360 degrees camera mounted in google van, typical street sceneries were captured closer than we’ve imagined many years ago. The sensible google street view have caught the interest of the public that most of the privacy watch dogs classified it as another google’s way of invading the confidentiality of public which is vulnerable to privacy abuse.
The mapping and close-up image capturing activities being done by Google might be aiming for something which is really hard to identify. All we could do is guess where are they heading. One thing that rings a bell to me is the active and massive recruitment of google of software engineers specifically with expertise in the field of mobile applications and telecommunication technicians as seen in their google career page few months back.
So, they are working on something which is related to mobile application and their previous features such as the street view and google map enhancement seem like pointing to a flourishing market of GPS. The GPS (Global Positioning System) is not new to us, it’s a tracking system that uses the different mapping technology that can pinpoint one object to specific location. The high resolution googlemaps and google streetviews is a perfect use for this form of application.
A site that will fit as an example of what we are talking right now is the www.gpsinsight.com. Using satellites and AT&T/T-Mobile, GPS Insight could provide exact vehicle positions thoughout the US and Canada updated every 2 minutes. They cost $1.50-2 per day per vehicle to give guarantee their customer the benefits such as improve labor payment management -no more labor paid when people aren’t really working, fuel savings and routing efficiencies. The support page and their company blog contain more info about this product.
Let’s proceed to the preview of the product that they are pushing. Click the image to view in larger scale.
The interface looks familiar isn’t it. As I’ve said this is one of the application of googlemap used in GPS tracking system. You can see how the trucks could be monitored round the clock. With this technology, the trucking owner, delivery services or similar business can easily identify the person who is taking a nap/break. With simple hardware installation and little bit of web-based GPS programming one can instantly take advantage of the the GPS technology and googlemap.
