Why add a Favicon and How to create you own FAVICON

The icon you see in your Favorites, and or in the address bar, that small image that you see beside the url address is called a FAVICON. For those who are using “internet explorer browser” you can only see the image when you bookmark or added the site in your favorite. (If you havn’t bookmark this site yet, you may do it now by right clicking here, and select bookmark this link) After that you should now see the live example of the favicon of this site. This is not related to search engine marketing but for sure it will bring a positive outcome on the site’s traffic and in your website itself.

Adding this little decoration is easy and quick but before that let me first tell you what are the advantages of having a favicon in your blog or in your site.

1.) It will increase brand awareness!..label your site with a nice little easy recognizable icon like the “Y” when you are browsing yahoo pages and the “G” when you are in google webpages.
2.) To make your website looks more professional and cutting-edge. This adds to a websites “look and feel”, and could give the site character, and a more professional appearance.
3.) Your site will stand out among all the others when a visitor scans through his or her favorites which is always a good thing as people can revisit your site. This way your user can easily associate with your site and also easily locate your site in browser bookmark listings by using your unique, eye-catching favicon.

Now, that you know the benefits are you still interested to attached this icon in your site? then let us proceed and read how I added it in this blog.

First you generate an ico file. The quickest way to do it is by using the readily available favicon generator online. You can find many sites offering this service, the one that I used however is this site that converts your image from your drive to favicon. You just upload the image that you want, sip a tea :) , then when the conversion is finished you can then download the zip file to your local drive then upload this later to your image server. You can even preview your favicon at that site so just be sure to check and see how your favicon will look before you download the file.

Now that you have the file that you need (ico), you will now upload it to your image server or if you are a blogspot blogger like me you can use the free file storage site called ripway. You might be thinking to use your favorite photoserver, but these sites appears to be only applicable for gif, png, jpeg files.. what we will be using is the “ico” file so please dont be confused.

although the gif and png favicon image seems to work fine, it will work on supported high end browser like mozilla firefox – it will not appear on internet explorer browser

So you should now have your ico file url, what you will do next is to insert below code between head tag ( head…. /head) of your blog. Go to your template >> edit the html code and insert the code as shown below, Just replace the href=”favicon.ico” and href=”animated_favicon1.gif” with your ico/gif url. I use the following code with my favicon url for example (please click the image to enlarge)

Save your template.. and your done!!.. you should have a nice looking (ehem) favicon like mine… feel free drop a comment if you have questions or anything that I could be of help.

Hi, as of now I don’t have the favicon.ico on my blog. With these, I will try to make one for it.
